# Creating TradingView Alerts

> Step-by-step guide to creating, naming, managing, and testing TradingView alerts from QuantNomad indicator conditions, with message templates.

> [!NOTE]
>
> **General TradingView information.** This section describes standard TradingView behavior, not a QuantNomad-specific feature. TradingView updates its interface regularly, so menu names and positions may differ slightly from what you see. When in doubt, check the [TradingView Help Center](https://www.tradingview.com/support/).

This guide covers creating and managing alerts from an indicator. For the concepts behind alerts, read [Understanding TradingView Alerts](https://docs.quantnomad.com/getting-started/tradingview-alerts.md) first.

## Create an indicator alert

**1. Add the indicator to your chart**

The indicator must be on the chart, on the symbol and timeframe you want to monitor, with the settings you want the alert to use.

**2. Open the Create Alert dialog**

Click the **Alert** (alarm clock) button in the top toolbar, or press <kbd>Alt</kbd> + <kbd>A</kbd> (<kbd>Option</kbd> + <kbd>A</kbd> on macOS).

**3. Choose the indicator as the condition**

In **Condition**, select the indicator from the first dropdown, then select the specific alert condition from the second dropdown.

**4. Choose a trigger frequency**

Pick how often the alert can fire. **Once Per Bar Close** waits for the bar to close and avoids alerts on signals that disappear before the close. See [Confirmed vs Unconfirmed Signals](https://docs.quantnomad.com/guides/confirmed-signals.md).

**5. Configure notifications and message**

Choose how you want to be notified (app, pop-up, email, webhook) and edit the message if needed. Then click **Create**.

> [!WARNING]
>
> An alert stores a copy of the indicator settings **at the moment it is created**. If you later change the indicator's inputs on the chart, existing alerts keep using the old settings. Delete and recreate the alert after changing settings.

> [!NOTE]
>
> For scripts that send alerts with `alert()` calls, including all QuantNomad UT Bot scripts, the script sets the message and how often it fires. To write your own message for a strategy, choose **Order fills only** instead. See [UT Bot v2 alerts](https://docs.quantnomad.com/free-indicators/ut-bot-v2/alerts.md#custom-messages-with-order-fill-alerts).

## Write a useful message

The message is what you receive in the notification. TradingView replaces placeholders in double curly braces with live values when the alert fires.

Commonly used placeholders:

| Placeholder | Value |
| - | - |
| `{{ticker}}` | Symbol, e.g. `AAPL` |
| `{{exchange}}` | Exchange, e.g. `NASDAQ` |
| `{{interval}}` | Chart timeframe of the alert |
| `{{open}}`, `{{high}}`, `{{low}}`, `{{close}}` | Bar prices when the alert fires |
| `{{volume}}` | Bar volume |
| `{{time}}` | Bar open time (UTC) |
| `{{timenow}}` | Time the alert fired (UTC) |

Example message:

```text theme={null}
UT Bot buy on {{exchange}}:{{ticker}} ({{interval}}) at {{close}}
```

See TradingView's help on [alert message variables](https://www.tradingview.com/support/solutions/43000531021-how-to-use-a-variable-value-in-alert/) for the full list.

## Manage your alerts

Open the **Alerts** panel (alarm clock icon in the right sidebar) to:

* See all active, stopped, and triggered alerts.
* Edit, restart, pause, or delete an alert.
* View the **Log** of past triggers.

> [!TIP]
>
> Name your alerts consistently, for example `UT Bot v2 | BTCUSD | 1h | Buy`. It makes managing dozens of alerts much easier.

## Common mistakes

> [accordion] Changing settings without recreating the alert
>
> Alerts keep the settings from when they were created. After changing the indicator's inputs, delete and recreate its alerts.

> [accordion] Using a trigger that fires on unconfirmed signals
>
> **Once Per Bar** can fire on a signal that disappears before the bar closes. Use **Once Per Bar Close** for confirmed signals. See [Confirmed vs Unconfirmed Signals](https://docs.quantnomad.com/guides/confirmed-signals.md).

> [accordion] Creating the alert on the wrong timeframe
>
> The alert uses the chart timeframe that was active when you created it. Switch to the right timeframe first.

> [accordion] Forgetting about expiration
>
> Alerts stop when they expire. Check expiration dates in the Alerts panel.
